After dropping the van off at the supply store and picking up my truck, I head back home, skipping the usual ranch house dinner with my cousins because after all the traveling and emotional yo-yo-ing with wanting someone and not knowing if you’ll get to have her, sometimes a man just needs a little alone time. But when I pull into the dusty driveway leading to my house, all those plans go out the window, because there’s a gorgeous redhead sitting on my front stoop waiting for me.

“Hey there, little lady,” I say, a big smile pulling at my mouth as I get out and walk toward her. “What’s got you travelin’ to this side of the ranch?”

“A little birdy told me there was this really hot cowboy livin’ out this way. So I decided to come and take a look for myself.”

“Caspian lives about ten minutes that way,” I say, thumbing over my shoulder as I squint against the sun glaring off my roof.

“Caspian?” She frowns and tilts her head adorably to the side in question.

“My brother. He’s the ladies' man of the family. There are four of us all up. I’m the oldest.”

She leans forward and rests her arms against her knees. “Huh. How did I not know you have brothers?”

“I dunno,” I say, moving so I’m standing right in front of her and she has to look up at me. “It never came up and you never really asked.”

“Seems we still have a lot to learn about each other then.”

“I s’pose we do.”

“How would you feel about maybe doin’ that while datin’ me? See, I had this plan when I came here. I was only supposed to be hangin’ about the ranch for a month or so, but after a lot of soul searchin’, I’m now thinkin’ I might just stay indefinitely. Maybe try out that whole ‘havin’ a boyfriend’ thing for a change. Know anyone who’d be interested?” She presses her lips together, and although her words have an air of teasing about them, I can see there’s still a little bit of fear in her eyes, like she's worried that I might not want what she's offering. Wild horses could not drag me away if they tried. I want everything she's offering and more.

I put one leg on the step next to where she's sitting and lean down, pulling my hat from my head as I make a show of mulling it over. “A date, you say?”

“Well, I was hopin’ for more than just one, but yeah...” she draws back her shoulders, straightening her spine and pressing out her god-given assets to try to tempt me to look down, but miraculously I keep my gaze locked with hers, “I’m here to ask you to go out on a date… with me, obviously.”

I narrow my eyes slightly, like I’m still not convinced. “Where to?”

Her mouth falls open before closing again, repeating the process and then turning into a laugh. “You know, I hadn't really thought that far ahead.
